geekyspeaky giveaways: june

win a 1gb flash drive

A new monthly contest is starting here today, and you’ll find another contest for June over on my other blog, Simple Kind Of Life. Both will be run exactly the same, with the same rules and deadlines, but each contest will have different prizes. The prizes will get bigger and better as the months go by, so stay tuned! The contest is open to any resident of any country. More info on that down below in the rules section.

This month we have 2 prizes. The grand prize for June is a:

1GB USB Flash Drive

flash drive

Forget about floppies and CDs – just put your data on a flash drive and transfer it from PC to PC or take it all with you.

The booby prize is a:

Futurama DVD

futurama dvd

(For those of you who aren’t down with American slang, the “booby prize” is a joke prize usually given in recognition of a terrible performance or last-place finish.) Futurama was a great TV show on the air a few years ago from the creator of The Simpsons, about a guy from our time living in the year 3000. This is the Monster Robot Maniac Fun Collection. Hilarious stuff. Ok, with me so far? Two prizes, and even the booby prize is a good one. And remember – better and bigger prizes each month.

Now, here’s how you enter!

Leave a comment: If you leave a comment on the contest post each month (FYI, this is the contest post for June) you get ONE entry into the drawing. The comment can’t be a generic “Hi”, or “Nice idea”, or “Pick me”. You’ve got to say WHY you want to win.

Blog it: You don’t need to be a blogger to enter, but read on if you are! If you blog about the contest, and link to the contest post (again, that would be this post right here, but it will change each month) you get THREE entries into the drawing. Just like when you leave a comment, your blog entry should be about why you want to win, it should direct others here to show them how they can win, and it should link to the contest post for that month. In order to submit your blog posting so that I know you get an extra three entries into the drawing, you need to EMAIL the link to me at colleen_ccATyahooDOTcom – please do NOT submit using the blog comments here. If you submit your blog posting via the comments, it will NOT be placed into the drawing. And then you can’t win. And that makes me sad.

(I had some great bloggers out there jump on this before I even said what prizes I’d be giving away, and those people are getting an extra three entries into the contest for the month of June. That offer is now closed, but the people who did it know who they are!)

MySpace Bulletin: Write about this on your MySpace as a bulletin for all of your friends to read, and get TWO entries into the contest! Just like blogging about it, the bulletin should let people know about the contest, and link here to let them enter it. In order to submit your MySpace bulletin to get the 2 extra entries into the contest, EMAIL the link to me at at colleen_ccATyahooDOTcom – please do NOT submit using the blog comments here. Again, if you use the comments, it doesn’t count for the extra entry!

Digg it: This entry has been submitted to Digg.com, and if you’re a Digg user, you can Digg It! Digging it gives you ONE entry into the contest. Signing up for Digg is free, so it’s worth your while to join if you aren’t already a member!

Share it: Are you a member of a forum? Well duh, aren’t we all? You’ve got a couple of options here. You can post about the contest at your favorite forum and let your forum friends know how to enter. Please don’t spam a forum though. When in doubt, ask the forum owner for permission. Alternatively, you can place the link to this entry in your forum signature, along with something like “Win at GeekySpeaky Giveaways!” Sharing on a forum gives you ONE entry into the contest. Again, email me if you go with this option so I know!

Create It: Think you’ve got a creative method for sharing the contest that I haven’t come up with? Let me know, and you may just be awarded bonus entries! Email me your ideas at colleen_ccATyahooDOTcom

So let’s recap, shall we?

  • ONE ENTRY INTO DRAWING: Leave a comment here saying why you want to win the prize, why you deserve it, or what you’d do with it. One comment per person please. (This is a random drawing, so I can’t really say creativity counts, but I’m interested to see what people come up with!)
  • ONE ENTRY INTO DRAWING: Hop on over to Digg.com and vote for this entry there. If you’re not a registered Digg member, sign up – it’s easy and free!
  • ONE ENTRY INTO DRAWING: Post about the contest in your favorite forum, or place a link here in your signature post on that forum.
  • TWO ENTRIES INTO DRAWING: Post about the contest as a MySpace bulletin for your friends to read, link here, and invite them to enter. Easy, peasy!
  • THREE ENTRIES INTO DRAWING: Blog about the contest on your site – link to this entry – and invite your readers to join. Got more than one blog? You can blog about this on EACH of your blogs, and earn three entries per blog!
  • LEGAL STUFF: The contest is open to any resident of any country. However, the prizes may not always work for your location. For example, I don’t know that a DVD from the USA will play in the UK. Should that be the case, and you win, I will substitute an Amazon.com (or other similar store) gift certificate for prize value (what I paid for it of course!) instead of that prize, if you prefer. Disclaimer: Contest is open to any resident of any country, except where prohibited by law. Rules and requirements are subject to change. I will never change the prizes, rules, or requirements during an open contest, but would instead announce any changes to be made when the next round started. I’m fair like that.

Wow. If you’ve got just one blog and a MySpace, and a Digg account, you can get entered into the drawing 8 times! Man, I’m generous. Take advantage of me!

The contest starts on the 1st of each month, and runs until the 21st of each month. In the last week of the month, I’ll pick an entry at random from everyone who commented on the contest post or blogged about the contest or put it on their MySpace or Dugg it…whatever! I’m going to need that week to compile entries and see who is getting their name put into the hat multiple times. I’ll post the winner here by the end of each month, along with a link to the winner(s) blogs, if they have one. In keeping with the theme of this blog, the prizes here will be a little geeky, or techy, and the prizes for the contest on Simple Kind Of Life will be more general.

Sound like fun? I hope so!

Hey Colleen, just letting you know I’m signing up. Also added your site to yesterday’s contest announcements. I’ll add it again today if ya’d like, just let me know. Funny, my hubby would love for me to win your booby prize.

I really want to win. As I wrote in my blog I would love to win the USB flash drive because I’m probably the last computer geek without one. I think I covered all the bases for entries. I posted it on my blog and forums and posted a myspace bulletin and
I dugg it too. What a great idea

I want the flash drive and Bill wants the movie, so we’ll be happy with either. :)

I need someplace to store all the pictures we take of the new baby. That’s why I should win. :)

I want the Flash drive .. but somehow I think I want the booby prize even more, I just realised that it’s shameful that I’m such a huge Futurama fan and don’t even have 1 DVD! Anyway, only one person can win, so here to the winner !

  6. Julie says:

I wrote about your contest on my blog. I Dugg you and commented over there. I want to win the flash drive because bigger is better.

I need to win the flash drive because I’m always running from computer to computer, trying to get some work done! Nice contest!

  8. Charity says:
    June 1, 2007 at 1:44 pm

Hmmmm, I guessed right on one of them! LOL, anyways, I could use a flash drive, but you had me at the booby prize. I love Futurama. Now I’d rather have that than the flash drive. LOL That’s my option. :)

Why I want to win? Two words – my newborn!

Like all other countless mamas, I’ve recently discovered an ‘obsessed to the point of compulsion’ and hitherto hidden photographer inside myself, one who feels every burp and every drool of my baby is worth recording for eternity.

However, the memory card of my new digital camera protests vigorously and refuses to store photos beyond a certain count. As I am quite capable of snapping a minimum of 50 photos in 5 minutes on an average day, I need this 1 GB USB to store my photos in and display proudly to friends and family (heck, even strangers!) no matter how disinterested or sick of it the poor people are ;-) So, please feed my addiction!

Great idea for a contest, Colleen!

I’d love the flash drive – even though I currently have 3 (all color-coded) to go along with different manuscripts or what have you – you can never have enough flash! :)

Flash drives save my life, let me tell ya!

  11. Nicole says:
    June 1, 2007 at 3:34 pm

I’d love to win the flash drive because for some reason my floppy disk drive quit working recently.

I think I must be one of the last people to still be using floppy disks anyway – the computers at university won’t even accept them anymore. And I don’t have a cd burner, so I’m currently without any better system than e-mail for transferring data between computers.

  12. David says:
    June 1, 2007 at 4:48 pm

I really need the booby prize simply because Futurama is amazing. As for the 1gb flash drive, that would be useful as well for transferring pictures of my travels to my relative’s houses.

  13. Charlotte says:
    June 1, 2007 at 4:55 pm

I’m commenting and I dugg it. I would love to have a flash drive. I have no external way to save things except for cds and I’m out of them :)

  14. Tammie says:
    June 1, 2007 at 6:21 pm

I need the flash drive because it would make for a great alternative to an external hard drive — and I don’t have one of those, either! Besides, I just love freebies! Bring it on!

  15. Linsey Knerl says:
    June 1, 2007 at 8:12 pm

I always need portable storage. I would use this daily in my writing and blogging. Thanks for the contest!

  16. ron says:
    June 1, 2007 at 9:43 pm

I need to win the flash drive. I would lighten my load as I wouldn’t need to even tote the laptop back and forth to work. Good idea for the contest. If I win the booby prize I’ll donate to one of the entrants who said they wanted the movie instead of the flash drive.

  17. Tess says:
    June 2, 2007 at 12:52 pm

Great contest! I dugg it and will write about it later. I’d love to win so I could send pictures back and forth to my mom – then she could print the ones she really wants. And who doesn’t love Futurama!

  18. caryl says:
    June 2, 2007 at 3:00 pm

Love your idea for a contest :) And yes I’d love to have that 1GB Flash card. Being a digi-scrapper, that would be a great help to store my downloadable goodies especially when I travel and need a handy storage…

  19. Judy says:
    June 3, 2007 at 11:38 am

I’m so in on this one too. What a generous person you are. I’ve been wanting to get a flash drive (got one free with my laptop, but it wouldn’t work… as blonde as I am it’s probably something I did wrong. I might have to contact you to have you tell me what to do!)

Of course, my daughter would rather I win the booby prize. There was a marathon on last night and she was planning on staying up for it. Who knows if she did? I went to bed!

  20. kailani says:
    June 3, 2007 at 3:12 pm

I’m entering this one, too! Thanks!

  21. Angela says:
    June 3, 2007 at 3:55 pm

Cool contest and great prizes! I’d rather have the jump drive since I’m still living in the dark ages and don’t have one…but my little brother does love Futurama…

  22. Gracey says:
    June 4, 2007 at 1:36 am

I’m entering and posting this ad in my site! I want the flash drive for my ever mobile hubby’s birthday. Here’s hoping to win!

  23. Amber says:
    June 4, 2007 at 6:49 am

Awesome idea! Either prize would be great to win. Count me in!

  24. Aggie says:
    June 4, 2007 at 7:49 am

Very original Colleen! Ill blog about this again! Im a digital scrapbooker and download huge amounts of files and pictures everyday. Having this big of a USB will certainly help me!

  25. JHS says:
    June 4, 2007 at 10:43 am

Well, I could really use another flash drive because I work in my office and at home . . . attorneys work 24/7, you know! And a flash drive certainly helps me take my work from place to place so that I am never without a document to work on no matter where I am. It’s all about time management for me, as you probably know, and a flash drive is a great tool to assist with that!

  26. High Strangeness Altoona says:
    June 4, 2007 at 1:56 pm

Ooooh I really need a new flash drive cuz one of mine went through the washing machine. Funny, but electronics and soapy, albeit enviromentally friendly soap, water don’t mix. Well, actually they don’t mix at all, but the data on my drive is lost to posterity.

  27. lattégirl says:
    June 4, 2007 at 4:32 pm

Count me in – by my count this-here makes 8 entries for me! (Still have to get going on the MySpace posting… lethargy struck along with shitty weather this past weekend.)

I have one USB flash drive but as someone so famously said, “You can’t be too rich, too thin, own too many pairs of shoes or have too many electronic storage units.”

Yeah, so I made the last two up. I’m pretty sure Imelda Marcos would agree with me on the shoes.

Are those Marcos people dead? Anybody know? Do we care?

  28. rose says:
    June 4, 2007 at 9:00 pm

This is cool. I want the flash drive. I don’t have one and I think life gets easier with it. Please count me in. Thanks!

  29. Jen / domestika says:
    June 4, 2007 at 9:55 pm

I’d love to win either one of these prizes. Futurama is a secret vice of mine (not so secret now, I guess!) and I’d love to have it for my very very own. As for the flash drive, I have a hope that it might convince me to clear some of the pile o’ photos off my camera and laptop, and stash them somewhere else before I accidentally delete something irreplaceable. Could happen!

  30. MacBros says:
    June 5, 2007 at 2:22 pm

I’m not getting my hopes up because I have never won anything, EVER. But it would be nice if this was the first though! I could actually use a 1GB Thumb drive!

BTW, making my way through the dofollow Link List.

  31. Alli says:
    June 6, 2007 at 10:19 pm

I would love to win either prize. Maybe the Futurama more than the flash drive, because that would earn me extra points with the hubby. We love Bender!

  32. Lisa says:
    June 7, 2007 at 8:12 pm

My boss decided the other day it would be fun to kick my poor flash drive while it was in the computer. My poor, abused flash drive just can’t take it anymore! I need a new one. Please? I promise I won’t let my boss anywhere near it!!

  33. Jennybrat says:
    June 9, 2007 at 7:09 pm

I’ve tons of ebooks and often choose the ebook version over the print one due to space constraints. That said, I’m paranoid about losing them so the Flash Drive would come in handy for me to backup my ebooks!

  34. Deb says:
    June 9, 2007 at 10:27 pm

I just bought a flashdrive, but the Futurama DVD..my son is a huge fan of Futurama! I’d love to give it to him. We like Bender

  35. John says:
    June 10, 2007 at 4:22 pm

I hope i win last place cause i really futurama, the flashdrive aint bad either. =]

  36. Jennifer, Snapshot says:
    June 11, 2007 at 1:11 pm

Well, I NEED this, because my laptop is already hopelessly short of memory (it’s ancient–4 years old).

I will probably blog about this and let my readers know and I’ll be sure to send you the link.

  37. Lesha Anderson says:
    June 12, 2007 at 3:37 pm

The flash drive would be very useful and I love Futurama. Great booby prize! :)

    Hi!
Well, I just wanted to tell you that I like your blog and your very honest approach to it.
However, I would like to point out that you did a sponsored review of Portable Bookmarks, which I think is a nice addition to my un-organized life, but you failed to mention –and the web site is also very sneaky about it– that the free version will stop working after 30 days! After that you will have to register it (read: buy it), or lose everything you had bookmarked… a very bad deal indeed.
BTW, to get this information I had to download the zipped version and read over the .chm file until I found what I was looking for.
I hope your sponsoring went good, but sometimes it might backfire.
    Best wishes!
Oh, yes, and I would love the flash drive, of course!

  39. DragSweep says:
    June 13, 2007 at 12:13 am

…but there are no boobies in the booby prize, so I think the USB drive would be wonderful. It’d help me move stuff between work and home. Besides, USB drives are geek-chic now, aren’t they?

  40. Jo says:
    June 13, 2007 at 12:54 am

Why I want to win? The flash drive would be great for my husband who is going to college fulltime right now. With a new flash drive he would have a much easier time taking his essays and reports from place to place!

Even the booby prize is great because my oldest son loves Futurama so either way I would be a happy camper!! :)

  41. Ben says:
    June 13, 2007 at 12:22 pm

I’d love to win this! It would make moving data back and forth so much easier!

Here via Mr. Fab’s Pointless Drivel blog. Hope to catch the blogtalk radio show,

Anyhoo would love to win the flash drive, save me wasting cd’s transferring files to the other PC.

  43. Don@AffiliateWatcher says:
    June 17, 2007 at 10:54 am

Well, first off, thanks for having this cool contest. Secondly, I need that flash drive really bad.

It would save me from having to drive into town and going to Fry’s. Or worse yet, BestBuy where I’d have to probably talk to some geek who’ll want to try and sell me a larger flash drive while explaining the quantum physics of a flash drive and how Window machines are better than Macs.

Also, at $3 per gallon, you’d be saving me quite a bit of money if I won the flash drive. I could also reinvest all that money into more blogging stuff!

Just a little something for you to think about…

    Don

P.S. did i mention what a fantastic website you have? :)
